Recycling Fabric for Sustainability

FABSCRAP needs help to sort all the fabric it receives from designers. It's easy to learn and fun to do!

What to expect:

  1. Welcome: Tour and overview of FABSCRAP (5 minutes)

  2. Training: Learn how FABSCRAP sorts fabric for recycling (10 minutes)

  3. Sort: Sort through fabric samples and large pieces, pulling out useable fabrics for reuse and removing hardware and paper from fabric swatches for recycling (2.5 hours). You’ll get to listen to fun music!

  4. Shop: As a thank you for your time, take home 5 lbs of material for free!

Fence Repair & Cleanup at Plumb Beach

Join the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and the National Park Service on National Public Lands Day at Plumb Beach, Brooklyn as volunteers repair the fence along the Jamaica Bay Greenway and help clean the park.

Sitting along the Belt Parkway in Sheepshead Bay, Plumb Beach offers a sandy beach, tons of wildlife viewing, and serves as a popular site for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Plumb Beach is perhaps most famous for the many horseshoe crabs that use it during mating season. Help us protect this valuable wildlife habitat by preparing the fence along the Jamaica Bay Greenway at Plumb Beach and removing trash from the park.

Gloves, bags, tools and refreshments will be provided. Volunteers are encouraged to wear weather appropriate clothing and sturdy, close toed shoes.

Bring Marine Science to Life for Kids!

Volunteer with Hudson River Park Friends at the SUBMERGE Marine Science Festival.  Hudson River Park’s SUBMERGE celebrates NYC’s coastal waters by bringing marine science to life. The festival aims to inspire audiences of all ages and make marine science accessible and engaging for everyone. We invite the public to experience awesome experiments, kid-approved science projects, catch & release fishing, kayaking, scuba diving shows and other live entertainment.

Volunteers will assist with the Welcome Tent, Photo Booth, Research Stations and more. Help give directions to the general public and assist the educators with set up/break down. The dress code is comfortable attire and closed toed shoes, the Park will provide lunch for all volunteers.

Volunteers are central to our work! Each season, thousands of volunteers help us keep NYC green by planting trees, maintaining public parkland, and caring for community gardens. Join us each week to connect with fellow New Yorkers and keep this city beautiful and healthy for everyone!

Build a more resilient community of citizens who feel connected to their local green spaces and supported by neighbors with similar values. Improve the health of the forest by identifying and removing invasive plants from our native forest as well as planting Native trees/shrubs.

Join the NYC Compost Project to lend a hand at QBG’s urban farm or learn how composted food scraps nourish the soil. Find out how to foster a farm ecosystem and grow healthy crops. Tasks vary by event, and may include weeding, harvesting, planting activities, processing food scraps, building a compost pile, or sifting finished compost.

The Afya Foundation is a charitable partner of NYP committed to recovering surplus medical supplies and equipment from healthcare centers. Each year, hundreds of volunteers donate a combined 25,000 hours of service to sort, catalog, and pack these recovered medical supplies. Once packed, these supplies are shipped to Afya’s public health partners to promote humanitarian aid and relief efforts in countries across the globe.

At this event, volunteers will support packing efforts at Afya’s Yonkers-based warehouse and will hear more about NYPgreen and NYP's partnership with the Afya Foundation.

At Halloween in the Garden, guests can make a seasonal botanical craft, see a magic show, and meet and take pictures with Flora, QBG’s friendly mascot!

Volunteers will help staff the craft and activity tables, assist with photo booth, guide people along the trick or treat trail, and staff candy stations. Come help make Halloween in the Garden memorable! Volunteers are encouraged to get in the spirit and dress in costume!

September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance is an annual and forward-looking tribute to the 9/11 victims, survivors, and those who rose up in service in response to the attacks.

Join Repair the World in marking the anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy by serving in solidarity with our community by prepping, serving, and cleaning up a community meal provided by local nonprofit Mandala Cafe.

All volunteers should wear closed toes shoes and clothes that can get dirty.

There are two shifts. You may sign up for one:

3:30 PM - 5:30 PM: Volunteers will support in preparing the weekly meal and help package toiletry kits.

5:30 - 7:30: Volunteers will support in serving and cleaning up after the meal.
